| Cate's Cause An Appeal Against Homelessness |
|
The appeal was inspired by the plight of a Queensland couple, Cate and Rick Bolt, and their nine children. Cate's family encountered major financial problems as a result of last year's economic downturn. "Rick was self-employed as a contractor in the alternate energy markets," Cate said. "The GFC resulted in his contracts being cancelled and we were hit with some unexpected and very big medical bills." "We fell into arrears on our rent and lost our home." Cate said finding appropriate accommodation has been difficult due to the size of her family.
Yesterday, not-for-profit organisation 4Walls found housing for the Bolt family outside Brisbane, but Chief Executive Officer, Carolyn Doherty, says there are many more individuals and families like the Bolts struggling to find safe, permanent and affordable accommodation. "We've been able to assist Cate and her family, but sadly this is not the end of homelessness in Australia." "Every night more than 100,000 Australians sleep in sheds, tents, parks, garages, caravans, shelters and on the street." "It's time we all pulled together to find a solution to this problem, which is why we have launched a national appeal against homelessness," she said. "The Bolt family are the modern face of homelessness and we are grateful that Cate has agreed to put her name to the appeal." Cate said anyone can become homeless a harsh reality that she's learned the hard way. "This appeal to address the growing issue of homelessness in Australia is brilliant." "Hopefully my experience will go some way toward helping those people currently struggling and prevent others from enduring similar struggles." "Government agencies are trying to help as we can not compete in the private sector because we are self-employed."
